The Strathcona Emergency Program is seeking host a Basic Amateur [Ham] Radio certification course in 2018. The purpose of this posting is to ask the residents of Cortes Island to provide their feedback on potential dates and times of this course. Currently we are thinking either:

1. One 3-hour long evening session per week from February to March 2018; or

2. One 3-hour long evening session per week from October-November 2018.

This course would be held at the Manson’s Landing Firehall over 8 weeks. We require 8 participants for it to run and the course would be maxed out at 14 people. The cost would be $30 per person. We would strongly encourage interested participants to attend a 90 minute introduction session one month before the course starts to the instructors can go over the course material, workload and expectations beforehand. You will also be given course resources.

Amateur radio brings people, electronics and communication together. People use ham radio to talk across town and around the world, all without the Internet or cell phones. It's fun, social, educational, and can be a lifeline during times of need. Having more certified amateur radio operators on Cortes Island and throughout the regional district will greatly increase our community’s emergency communications capability. Attending all class dates is encouraged, but not mandatory. Some knowledge of electricity or electronics is helpful, but not essential. Certificates are awarded upon passing the basic exam and are good for life. Once you achieve your certification if you would like to learn more the Cortes Island Community Radio Learning Enterprise [CIRCLE] exists to help new hams develop their skill-set further.

I hope to hear from you.
