Noba, Mary & Zyla at the 50 Summers of Love
General News · 16th August 2017
Noba Anderson
My daughter Zyla (shown here with me and Mary at Sunday’s Summer of Love celebration) is five months old and I am truly delighted to share with you that the Strathcona Regional District has taken a provincially significant leadership role in response to her birth. Very few local politicians have babies while in office and provincial legislation provides no provision for parental leave. It is up to each local government to respond as they see fit. Legally they could have offered me three months unpaid leave after which, if I did not return, I would have been removed from office. Although it took some time, they granted me a year of paid maternity leave while my alternate, Mary Lavelle, also receives the stipend. Because this is an elected position, I would not have taken the full leave if my ability to stay engaged was entirely removed. I am therefore grateful that Mary and I have been permitted to job share. Cortes will continue to have the benefit of both of our attention (although mine to a lesser extent) until February 2018. Mary will be attending all the Regional District meetings in town, I will continue to sit as the board’s representative on the Community Health Network, and we are sharing Cortes-specific constituency work. Mary is taking on all the regular day-to-day work, general inquiries, and anything I can responsibly hand off. I will stay engaged on the big picture files including the Zoning Bylaw review, the budget process, contract negotiations, etc. and turn my extra time to a few longer-term files that don’t generally get my attention. I will also be exclusively handling the renewed interest in considering core funding for Cortes community halls as Mary is in conflict of interest.

For most issues please first contact Mary until the end of February 2018 at 250-935-0235 or

The next local government election will be held in the fall of 2018. By late spring of that year, a few months after returning to my full duties, I will let you know if I intend to seek re-election.

It is a true honour to serve my community in this way.

To Director-on-leave:
It would be a huge advantage :~) to a great number of us if you would turn your attention to getting high speed internet access via the fiber optic lines strung all around the island now for more than 5 years.
What a team!
