Vuokko (Vi) Luhtanen passed away on Saturday night the 23 April 2017 from a bacterial infection related to and very much like Necrotizing Fasciitis (Flesh Eating Disease). There will be a short graveside service before interment in the Whaletown Cemetary. Matti and I would like to extend their invitation to everyone who wishes to attend.
Time and date are not yet finalized. I will pass this information along as soon as possible.
Thank you to everyone who have already expressed their condolences. This has been a very trying time for Matti and I but, with the wonderful support of the Cortes Islanders we will manage.
This has been written by Vi and Matti's daughter, Donna Collins.

Looking through the tideline announcements I just saw Vi's name. I am so sorry about her death. We were friends ever since they came to Cortes. Matti and Sedley were boh boat people. When they came to visit there were always long tales about their adventures. Matti nd Vi sure saw a lot of this world. I will miss seeing them both very much and can not believe I shall not see her again. She was such a wonderful down to earth person. Say hello to Sedley

Vi was an interesting, gentle, smiling, woman who will be very much missed. She and Matti were very private but always ready with a smile and a giggle. I keep looking for them on mail days where I met them often, Cortes has lost a lovely person.

Vi was so full of the joy of life. It is hard to believe that she is gone. :(

Vi was such a wonderful person - always cheerful and smiling. A real ray of sunshine - and she always had something interesting talk about. I admired her a great deal - and Matti as well. She did a wonderful job of looking after Matti - never a harsh word - just love.
I will miss her smiling face

Donna, we came to know Vi and Matt through the Senior's group as well as on our walks that took us down SeaVista to the beach.
Such a beautiful love story these two shared and their vitality and love of life were so evident. Vi was such a walking testimony of perseverance and total commitment to Matti......she will be greatly missed, most of all by Matti and you.
I had an opportunity to visit Matti in the hospital and his love for Vi burns just as strong as in past days......praying for both you and Matti as you step into this next chapter of life.....you are precious, Donna.

My family and I have a place towards the bottom of Seavista and seeing Vi and Matti taking their walks to the end of the road and back became something that all of us on Seavista saw as a staple to our little community. She contributed to atmosphere of friendship and family for all of us. Please accept our condolences.
