Laura Ellingsen, CIS PAC
The students of Cortes Island School are planting a mixed nut hedgerow at the school for students and wildlife. We are looking for donations of local nuts and nut seedlings; hazels, filberts, walnuts, hardy almonds, edible chestnuts, and more.
This year we are planning on planting a nursery bed with nuts and nut seedlings. The students will tend the seedlings, monitor growth over the next few years and plant them out in the hedgerow once they reach a good size. Any larger nut trees we receive, the students will plant directly into the hedgerow to get a good head start on nut production.
The nut hedgerow project is part of our larger food sustainability initiative which includes the school gardens, orchard, and healthy snacks and hot lunch program.
If you have nuts or nut seedlings to donate please call Laura at 6559.
Thank you FOCI for partnering in the CIS Eco Ed Program.
And thank you to the Cortes Island community for your continued support of our school.
