EMERGENCY ACCOMMODATION FUND DISCOVERY ISLANDS RESIDENTS
On occasion, ambulance, coast guard or helicopter transports Discovery Island residents in a health emergency to the Campbell River Hospital for further assessment. You may have been evacuated without funds and/or appropriate clothing. Sometimes one gets discharged suddenly, after ferry hours, with no way to return home and no place to stay for the night.
What you can do if this happens to you: In this situation, talk to the Emergency Room staff, which can help with the following arrangements.
1. The Salvation Army in Campbell River has agreed to procure a bed (if one available) free of charge for anyone caught in this situation. They have 22 beds at Evergreen shelter, located at 690 Evergreen Rd. There is no closing time but call them prior to arrival. Phone 250-287-3791.
2. Another option is to ask the staff to stay in the Healing Room in the Sunshine Wellness Center. Again there is no charge for this. A couch and blankets will be provided as well as water and bathroom facilities. Phone books for both Quadra and Cortes are available to assist.
3. The third option is to call the Coast Discovery Inn at 250-287-7155. Quadra Circle Society has arranged for emergency accommodation in advance, based on availability. Mention the Emergency Accommodation Fund and the Discovery Inn desk clerk will provide a room for the night, continental breakfast in the am and, if needed, a TAP form to use for your return home (ferry). The staff in the Emergency room will provide the taxi (free of charge) to take individuals to the Inn.
Reimbursement for your stay: Use of the hotel in this circumstance in not meant to be a free service but rather a stopgap for those in need. The users are expected to pay back some or all of the funds so that others will benefit from the service. Seed money to initiate this fund has come from Quadra, Read Island and Cortes residents, some of whom have been stranded in health emergencies.
