Local Salsa Band, Zandhunga, is all set to heat up the Gorge Hall this Saturday, July 2nd. This conga driven, salsa slinging, 5 piece Latin Combo band insures and all night dance party with fast paced salsa rhythms.
Conga lessons will be held at 6pm for $5. These rhythms can be played on any drum so calling all you drummers out for this one (bring your drum with you!). Salsa lessons will be available at 7:30pm for $5 taught by professional salsa instructors. Last year I watched these guys teach people how to spin each other around in less than an hour... it was awesome!
The dance itself will start at 9pm-12am for $15 (or pwyc).

Live salsa heats up the summer as Vancouver Island-based Latin band Zandhunga comes to town.
Expect nothing less than high-energy Latin dance-party vibes from Zandhunga at the Gorge Hall, Saturday, July 2nd. This Vancouver-Island based ensemble has toured internationally, taking their lively and infectious blend of Latin music as far as Taiwan led by Mexican-born percussionist and lead vocalist Oscar Robles Diaz who grew up to the sweet sounds of salsa as a boy: “It’s just about having fun,” he says, “whether you grew up with the music or it’s new to you, whether you know and practice the dance steps specific to each style or not…it’s all good!”
His slick grooves and great solos on the congas are backed by brilliant bass tumbaos played by ‘Britt de La Isla’ (Brittany Bowman) and mesmerizing montunos played by keyboardist ‘La Tomasa’ (Kelly Thomas). Amid multiple voices, the horn section is happening with the fantastic stylings of Jeff Agopsowicz on slide trombone and former Cortes resident – Jake Masri on trumpet.
Zandhunga’s repertoire includes a high-dosage of salsa with tribute paid to such legends as Hector Lavoe and Willie Colon, as well as the queen of salsa, Celia Cruz, amongst others. Merengue and cha-cha-cha is in mix, as well as the occasional Latin-jazz classic such as A Night in Tunisia but prepared with mucho spice à la Poncho Sanchez.
