Hollyhock - Heather Scott
Thank you to everyone who joined us at Hollyhock for the two presenter evenings that kicked off our season of community events.
On May 13th, Donna Martin and Shelley Winton started the season with an evening of gentle movement. Donna hails from Kamloops, British Columbia and is a certified Hakomi therapist with international reach. Donna has created her own practice, called psoma yoga therapy, which integrates yoga with the Hakomi method, challenging us to understand our habitual body-mind reactions to common experiences. Her partner Shelley is a Registered Nurse and yoga teacher from Edmonton, Alberta who studied the efficacy of the psoma yoga practice for her Master’s thesis in Psychotherapy and Spirituality. Thank you to everyone who showed up and filled the room with your energy - the evening was full of laughter, joy, and community.
On May 29th we hosted renowned Canadian watercolourist David McEown. Having spent much of his young adulthood in Northern Ontario, he became enamoured with the beauty of winter landscapes and well practiced in transferring that beauty into his artwork. For the remainder of his life he has spent countless hours exploring and painting in some of the world’s coldest environments, from Svalbard to Patagonia, Churchill to the Weddell Sea. David uses his art as a way to depict the environmental changes occurring around the world, and travels far and wide to teach others the art of watercolour. Through his engaging storytelling, David took attendees around the world with him in just one hour, and then completed a 20 minute speed painting of the Northern Lights to demonstrate his techniques and the importance of trusting your creative self.
Our presenter evenings are open to the entire Cortes Community, with admission by donation in support of the Islander Scholarship Fund. This scholarship fund is available to Cortes Island residents to help cover a portion of tuition costs for programs at Hollyhock.
Take a look at the June Calendar of Events to check out what’s coming up - there will be dancing, photography, laughter, and learning abound!
A special thank you to the Cortes Community and to the invaluable staff and volunteers who help to organize these events!
