Susanna for SeaFest
For the startlingly low price of $20, this year's Seafest cooks will serve three cooked oyster dishes, oysters prepared in three versions on the barbecue, two clam dishes, a sushi rice salad on Curious Farm spring mix garnished with a prawn and wasabi nori, and artisan bread from the Natural Food Co-op. Plus there are more vendors than ever with Klahoose salmon and bannock; desserts, pies, ice cream, kale chips, kid snacks, non-alcoholic drinks and freezies. Not only is this just part of the food list - there will also be clothing, ceramics, jewelry, art and information about many things Cortes.
Ayami's Oysters in Miso sauce includes Muin, Sake and Dashi as well as a dark and light miso and black and white sesame seeds - a socially balanced sauce with a hint of exotica.
Penny and Claude's Honest Oystees have all the favorites in the pan: ginger, garlic, butter and lemon--but then Sriracha comes to the mix like a movie starlet in a red dress.
Imagine preparing oysters for your grill and requiring 12 large jars of mayonnaise and 35 bunches of green onions. Just part of what it takes to make the sauce for Oysters Motoyaki in the half shell on the barbecue.
New this year: A clam chowder so old time down-east accurate that one doesn't say chowder but "Chow-da."
All shellfish served at SEAFEST are certified safe to eat.
SeaFest is at the Gorge Harbour Marina, Saturday May 21st. Serving begins at 11:30. Free shuttle meets every ferry for off-island friends. Pre-sale food tickets are available in Cortes grocery stores, starting Thursday, May 12th.
