Each year on January 27th, Canadians across the country celebrate “Family Literacy Day”. In B.C., the celebrations last even longer with Decoda Literacy Solution's "Family Literacy Week” (January 24 – 31).

What is Family Literacy?:
Family literacy refers to the way parents, children, and extended family members use literacy at home and in the community. Family literacy occurs naturally during the routines of daily living and helps children and adults get things done. Family literacy activities can positively affect children’s motivation, their behaviour, and their self-esteem and confidence.

This year’s Family Literacy Week theme is “Let’s Play Together”. Play is vital in children’s lives. It is important for healthy physical, social, emotional and cognitive development. It helps children make sense of the world around them. Children are active learners. When children play, they are experimenting, observing, making mistakes and trying again, imitating, asking questions, and listening carefully. This is how they learn.
