I understand that folks have put a great effort into the new Cortes Rideshare service. It is well intentioned and well designed.
However in talking to some frequent rideshare users on the Island (i.e. those of us who do not own cars), many of us fear that although the service may be well used by those of us seeking rides, it is easily overlooked by those with rides to offer. The old system was messy indeed, but often rideshares happened because people were scanning the Tideline by habit, noticed requests there, and reached out to offer help. The new system requires an extra step, and it is not one we are accustomed to making.
The Rideshare Board will not work unless people cultivate the habit of automatically checking it whenever they are heading out with an empty seat. Hopefully that habit will take hold over time.
In the meantime, I want to remind car drivers to please check the board regularly. Sharing the ride is a great service to car drivers (save money and gain karma!), to hitchers (get where we're going comfortably and efficiently and help our neighbours cover car costs), to the Island community, and to our planet.
