HAVE YOU BEEN WONDERING?? - SATURDAY, JUNE 20th, 2015
Curiosity is running high about “the Mushroom Projects” around the lakes. If you rely on a lake system for fresh water you’ll want to check out the installation of a myco-filtration system along Gunflint Lake. This simple ecological system utilizes mycelium (mushroom family) inoculated in wood chips and spread strategically where runoff and leaching occurs. Mycelium gobble up phosphates and nitrates that cause algae blooms in lakes. A bonus is harvesting delicious giant mushrooms! Find out all about this great project and have all your questions answered on the Cortes Museum’s annual tour of Creative Spaces - Gardens, Studios & Workshops on Saturday, June 20th, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm.
Behind the long fence next to Hollyhock - the Watson family is pleased to open the gates to their waterfront property conceived as rolling seaside meadows, wildflowers and a habitat for birds and insects with a spring-fed pond. Look behind more fences and visit hidden gardens, ponds, secret woodland trails, creative landscaping, rocky bluffs and visit studios for ceramics, pottery, hand painted canvas rugs, photography and colourful paintings. Intimate and spacious; matured and new; landscaped and naturally wild; private and community - it’s all on this year’s tour of Cortes gardens, studios and workshops.
Creative artists gather at a gallery and invite you into their private home studios. Visit the spacious studio and gallery of a world renowned and award winning photographer who grew up on Cortes. Gardeners and artists will open their garden gates and studio doors to visitors for this popular tour on June 20th. The annual tour reflects the creativity, resourcefulness and ingenuity of Cortes Islanders. They are endlessly innovative in the protection of their gardens from deer and invasive species, such as Scotch broom. A garden host will be on-site at each tour stop, welcoming tour visitors to his/her creative space, as well as fielding questions from (and swapping stories with) the day’s numerous guests.
Tickets with a map are $12 - available in early June at Cortes stores, the Museum & Friday Markets. Support this annual fundraiser for the Cortes Museum's education, community outreach & archival programs.
