To Our Listeners:

It's almost AGM time again - May 31st, 1pm at Mansons Hall, mark your calendars! Some very fine things have happened in the last year.

We were given a professional 16 channel radio broadcast console which is now installed and in use! It should be far more reliable than our old board.

We've added several new shows including:

Adventure Rider Radio
The Eco Report
The Scavenger Music Show
Vibes & Such

We have a grant application in progress that would enable us to set up an emergency power system, so that CKTZ is never off the air and available to spread news in the event of a real emergency. By March 31, 2016 all radio stations in Canada are required to install a emergency alert system; we plan to get that done too.

In 2013 and 2014 we received a community radio grant in partnership with CJMP Powell River and CKVS Salmon Arm. This grant allowed us to pay a part-time station manager plus some technical wages, and to hire a Programmer for First Nations content. Aside from the welcome funding, there was a lot of learning, networking, and advancement for all 3 stations. It was a great experience.

Unfortunately we received word last week that we and our partner stations were not re-awarded this grant for 2015. Ouch! This is a serious setback for us. We're going to be more dependent on listener donations next year than we had hoped.

We'd like to take a moment to ask donors if they would consider donating directly to the station without trying to get the "charitable donation" tax write-off. CKTZ does not have charitable organisation status, and it's increasingly difficult for any other organisation that does have status to disburse funds to us. We'd be very grateful for smaller amounts, as long as they actually do reach us!

So... in summary, we've come a long way with Cortes Radio in the last year - but as our organisational year ends, we are unexpectedly facing a serious financial challenge. We're going to need your help if we want to stay on the air. How much help? It costs about $24,000 per year to keep the station going. We have to pay rent, phone bill, Hydro bill, internet rebroadcast fees, insurance, SOCAN fees, CRTC license fees, equipment repairs and so on...

So if Cortes Radio is important to you… any financial, volunteer, or fund-raising support you can give will be greatly appreciated. We will be at SeaFest on Saturday selling memberships, tee shirts, solar lanterns, KD cleaning cloths, winter 2015 Lip Sync DVD's and anything else we can think of. We are also there to hear your ideas! We'll be recording interviews and new station id's as well.

For any future grant applications, increasing both our membership numbers and attendance at our coming AGM (May 31st), will help. Membership is only $15.00 for a year, and our AGM is at Manson's Hall starting at 1 pm.

Please come to our AGM, stand for our Board, and/or sign up to volunteer! We particularly need a new Treasurer for our Board, and we would love to find some members willing to sell CKTZ items and memberships regularly at Friday Markets.

See you on the 31st!
