AM I BEING ABUSED?

Abuse is using force or threats of force to control someone. Some forms of abuse are more difficult to recognize than others.

EMOTIONAL ABUSE

Behaviour which attacks a person’s self-esteem. It may include constant criticism, threats to harm you, the children, family, friends, your possessions, your reputation, or even pets. Threats of suicide are abusive, as is isolating you from family and friends.

PHYSICAL ABUSE

May include beating, burns, bites, shoving, slapping, kicking, or use of weapons. Being deprived of basic necessities such as food, shelter, medical care, or sleep is also abusive.

SEXUAL ABUSE

Being forced or manipulated into unwanted touching, sex, or distasteful or painful sex acts is abusive. As are excessive jealousy, name calling, and put downs with a sexual connotation.
Economic and spiritual abuse are a couple of the many other forms of abuse.

HOW DOES ABUSE AFFECT ME?

Abuse affects many aspects of your life. As a victim of abuse you may feel:
Fear, Betrayed, Worthless, Angry, At Fault, Isolated, Hopeless, Depressed, Numb, Shame

ARE MY CHILDREN AFFECTED BY ABUSE?

Children are affected by abuse in the home whether they are witness to the abuse or not. Children can feel the atmosphere of tension and fear in their home.
