As many of you are aware, the price of nutritious food is prohibitive in the North as is the cost to get other needed items there. I am seeing if I might be able to get several Islanders interested in sponsoring a family in the North with this charitable endeavor. Food boxes are needed but it may be more cost effective to order from a supplier closer to the North. Other things needed I thought could be collected locally. Other than food items, adult and childrens clothing, outer wear, fabric, wool yarn, thread, beads, fishing line for sewing, shoes, boots, etc. are needed. Shipping costs can be huge, so $$ donations to help cover that are needed, as well. I don't have a family assigned yet so wanted to use this time to find out if anybody else is interested. The family may have particular needs, so that will influence what is sent. If we sponsor a family, the commitment is 4 boxes a year minimum. OR we can commit to just the one. It would be kind of nice to get to know a family... There is a Facebook page with the Helping Our Northern Neighbours name. It has been in the news this past weekend so is a bit overwhelmed. Canadians stepping up! Enough with relying on the gov't to help. None of this should be needed but it is what it is. If you would like to help, donate items or $$ when we get a family assigned, give me a call or email. 250-935-0181
