The Strathcona Regional District currently provides roadside pick-up of both refuse and recycling materials for residential properties on Cortes Island. Commencing Saturday, May 24th, changes to the pick-up of recycling materials will be implemented. These changes are in response to the new Multi-Material BC program in which the Regional District is participating. Multi-Material BC is a program through which packaging producers are responsible for, and pay for, the recycling of their products.

•Your Recycling Container: reusable bags will be supplied for you to use. Please secure these reusable bag(s) by either loosely tying them or securing them with a large twist tie. The contractor will leave you with empty reusable replacement bag(s) to ensure you always have a supply. The clear bags will make it easy for the contractor to ensure that they are picking up acceptable recycling materials.

•Sorting: You can now comingle all recycling in one bag except for glass which must be separate.

•Film Plastics (i.e. plastic bags) & Styrofoam: Although plastic grocery bags and other film plastics, as well as plastic foam packing (i.e. Styrofoam) are not accepted at roadside, these materials can be brought to the Cortes recycling centre.

•Biodegradable or Compostable Labeled Packaging: This is to be treated as garbage and not included in your recycling or better yet compost it!

•Glass: Only clear and coloured non-deposit glass bottles and jars that have been emptied and rinsed will be accepted at roadside and must be placed in a separate bag.

Your assistance in recycling according to these instructions will ensure the success of the program. The Regional District, as part of participation in the program, receives a financial incentive and all monies are specifically accounted for within the Cortes Island residential roadside refuse and recycling service only.
