I showed up, as well as others. Due to the storm I guess the meeting was called off, however the power was back on at 5:00 ish. At least the south part of Cortes. Kudos to the line-people who worked to get power restored to some of us.
The part that troubles me the most about power outages is the communication, or for better, a lack thereof. When the phones shut down we loose contact with our neighbors, friends and most importantly, emergency personal. Time is of the essence in an emergency situation. I feel that hydro is second, to the line of communication. I suggest we request a generator for the phone lines.

It's difficult being without phone and power for a couple of days but we must remember that we live on an island. If not being able to phone 911 is intolerable then I'd suggest a cellphone. Clearly there is no guarantee that services will always be there when we need them. Cortes was settled by independent and rugged individualists and if the odd power or phone outage makes Cortes a less attractive retirement location, all the better !

A generator doesn't help much when a tree also takes out the phone lines. Rapid response by Telus is the key to security of land-line communications, at least for us poor sods who don't have cell phones as well.

Yes, I agree. Let's talk to telus or someone about getting generators installed for our phone lines. In Whaletown we were without phones for 2 days - that's a major concern when it comes to having 911 access.
