Mark your calendars
Saturday, November 10 from 1 pm– 3 pm at the Cortes Natural Food Coop, Café.
It’s a button party!!!!!!!

Fairahn Reid, Eira-Shay Barker Hart and Katie Rain Wheeler will be hosting the event!
Original youth artwork depicting 8 species at risk on Cortes Island has been made into buttons to spread the word about the pressing need for provincial legislation to protect our species at risk.
You will not be able to choose just 1 of the 8 beautiful animal designs, so make it easy on yourself and pick up a set of 8 for $20.00 and give them away to friends It’s like seed dispersal; in this case, the message needs to be carried far and wide!

On October 13, Cortes youth & friends rocked downtown Victoria The youth hosted an educational rally on the legislative grounds to champion Bill M211, the Species At Risk Protection Act. As the Times Colonist reported on the rally, “The group is supporting a private member’s bill introduced by the NDP last year. The provincial species-at-risk task force provided a report to cabinet last year, but government has not yet introduced legislation.”

Wilderness Committee’s policy director, Gwen Barlee, reports that British Columbia has “the richest biodiversity in all of Canada. BC is home to 76% of Canada’s bird species, 70% of its freshwater fish species, 66% of its butterfly species and 41% of its orchids.”

Did YOU know that BC has 1900 species at risk … and NO endangered species law?
This is what our Cortes youth & friends in Victoria are championing!
Come out and support them on November 10!!

All button sale profits go towards purchase of the Children’s Forest, here on Cortes Island.
This youth initiative is supported by the Forest Trust for the Children of Cortes Island Society.
