Kathleen Jean (née Jensen) Campbell:
Dec. 24, 1933 – July 28, 2026, Age 92 years
Jean was born on December 24, 1933, in Haney, BC, to her Danish immigrant parents, Knud Helge Jensen and Oda Dagny Antoinette Larsen. In 1938, the family (which included her sister Lillian) moved to Wells, BC, where Jean attended school and
enjoyed cross-country skiing, panning for gold with her family, playing basketball, and singing in the church choir. Upon graduation, she attended Normal School in Vancouver and became a schoolteacher on Denman Island.
While in Vancouver, Jean renewed contact with her former high school teacher and basketball coach Daniel Robert John Campbell. They married on December 22, 1952, and settled in Courtenay, BC where Dan was a schoolteacher and teachers’ union representative. Within a few years, Jean consented to Dan’s new “hobby” of joining the Social Credit Party.
In 1956, Social Credit Party Leader W.A.C. Bennett recruited Dan to run in the Comox Electoral District (then consisting of northern Vancouver Island and the Discovery Islands). With Jean’s blessing and strong support, Dan won his first of five consecutive
electoral victories. They were a dynamic and popular team, with a host of friends and a reputation for legendary hospitality.
In 1980, Jean and Dan retired to live at Hague Lake on Cortes Island. They kept a huge garden, flirted with animal husbandry (pigs and chickens), painted, played cards, solved New York Times crossword puzzles (Jean’s passion), and read books (Dan
even wrote one). Most of all, they graciously hosted a steady stream of friends, family, and local Cortes Islanders in their home. Some of her friends dubbed Jean as “The Hostess with the Mostest”. Even after Dan passed in 1992, Jean carried on the tradition. As recently as her 90 th birthday year, Jean hosted over
50 overnight visits in a single calendar year, plus a daily parade of friends who loved to spend time with her.
Jean was predeceased by her parents, her sister Lillian, and her sweetheart Dan. She is survived by her four children: Michael (Emilie, plus grandchildren Margie and Niki), Mark (Louise, plus
grandchildren Karen, Cody, Kyle, and Lee), Susan (Heiner, plus grandson Jason), Shannon (Keith, plus grandchildren Aaron and Kristine), as well as 14 great-grandchildren. The entire family mourns the loss of our beloved matriarch.
