Cortes Island Foundation
In cities, you call a number. On Cortes, you call a neighbour.
Care doesn’t happen in isolation. It grows from relationships, shared values, and collective action, and community infrastructure that makes caring possible.
The Cortes Island Community Foundation helps these Acts of Care be performed, contributing to the soil from which thousands of acts of care can grow.
Every day, people quietly show up for one another. A neighbour offers a ride. Someone delivers a meal. Volunteers mentor youth, respond to emergencies, restore habitat, organize community events, care for elders, and lend a helping hand whenever it's needed. These moments rarely make headlines, but together they are the invisible infrastructure that makes Cortes work.
This summer, the Cortes Island Community Foundation is inviting everyone to help make that care visible through 10,000 Acts of Care.
Our goal is to celebrate 10,000 acts of generosity, stewardship, volunteerism, and neighbourliness taking place across our island.
Why count care?
Because what gets measured gets attention.
And what gets attention grows.
For generations, Cortes has been built through countless acts of generosity, volunteerism, stewardship, creativity, and neighbourliness. Most of that work never appears in a report, a budget, or a funding application.
10,000 Acts of Care is our way of making the invisible visible.
The Foundation exists to help strengthen this ecosystem of care. Since our inception, together we've invested more than $7.4 million into local community impact—supporting childcare, education, food security, community grants, arts and culture, environmental stewardship, and the organizations and volunteers who make Cortes a place where people look after one another.
Now we're inviting you to be part of the story.
Think of a moment when someone helped you. A neighbour who showed up. A volunteer who made a difference. A simple act of kindness that stayed with you. Or perhaps a moment when you were able to care for someone else.
