Police departments across BC are receiving reports that their non-emergency telephone number is being displayed on alleged scam calls being made across Canada.
Please remember: Police departments will never call you to request your banking information, passwords, PINs or payment.
Scammers can manipulate caller ID so a call appears to come from a legitimate telephone number. Seeing a police departments non-emergency number on your screen does not necessarily mean the call is from a police department.
This is the same for banks, financial institutions, organizations etc etc.
If you receive a suspicious call:
X Do not provide personal or financial information.
X Do not send money or purchase gift cards.
X Hang up immediately.
X Contact your financial institution directly using a trusted number if you believe your information may be at risk.
X Report suspected fraud to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and your local police.
Please share this information, particularly with family members or others who may be vulnerable to these scams.
