Living on their bones
Work, tears, joy, love of this place
Our ancestor’s bones

We, their living face
This island, alive, awake
Grateful to mystery

Children of this land
Rise in love, call upon them
Our effort is food

Your bones matter here
You remembering us here
Life remembers you

John and Kristen, who passed together on the same night 6 months ago, celebrated summer solstice in their own quiet and intentional way. Tonight I turn my huge gratitude to them, and to their whole generation that raised my whole generation, that is now raising the next.

It was such an honour to support John & Kristen’s passing in their home… The unspeakable beauty I have witnessed in the final days of people’s lives is real. When a high-vibrational space is held with love the heart cracking open, the soul healing that is available is pure magic. I was invited to share my experience of John & Kristen’s passing on a podcast ‘A Path Home’ with Sarah Crews and the interview turned into a love letter to the generation that raised me, now my beloved elders. I share it as a summer solstice gift to you.

Kristen and John were my elders and teachers. But truth is, so are another 200 of you! Your generation built this community, living the knowing that ‘community’ is a VERB, not a noun. And I have the unfathomably profound privilege of inheriting this legacy from your love and efforts. This relatively intact land, our robust sense of community, all our local organizations and spaces. This is one of the very best places on earth to live and we know it!! It is in HUGE part to the generation who came here to build something different; the visionaries and draft-dodger, the hippies and philanthropical dreamers. Most of you came here with little cash in your pockets, bought land, built homes, grew food, loved your families with everything you had, and now you are in your final chapter, a time of sharing, of knowing the value of your beingness… to sit and hold space for the infinite. You will leave the legacy of this place to us… and I can’t imagine this place without you, you who I have known since the beginning of memory… and your neighbours and your co-conspirators – those with whom you have breathed – breathed life into this dream that we now all live, however foibled and imperfect, it is SO beautiful! My heart breaks at the very thought of living without you. But I will. WE will! And it too will be beautiful.

On bended knee in gratitude to our elders, for all that upon which I stand.
