Planned Power Outage to Affect Cortes Island on Sunday, June 7
Residents and businesses on Cortes Island are being reminded of a planned BC Hydro power outage scheduled for Sunday, June 7, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The outage is expected to affect customers throughout the Powell River region, including Cortes Island, Lund, Texada Island, and Saltery Bay.
Approximately 14,000 customers will be impacted.
The outage is part of BC Hydro's ongoing Jervis Inlet and Agamemnon Channel Power Line Replacement Project, a major infrastructure upgrade designed to improve public safety, increase system capacity, and strengthen long-term electrical reliability for communities throughout the region.
According to BC Hydro, crews will use the outage period to complete critical transmission system upgrades and maintenance work that can only be carried out when the power lines are de-energized. The work includes upgrades near Saltery Bay and improvements to the regional transmission system that serves coastal communities.
This will be the second and final planned outage associated with the current phase of the project. A similar 12-hour outage took place on May 24. BC Hydro says the maintenance completed during these outages will help reduce the risk of future unplanned power interruptions and support a more resilient electrical system for years to come.
Residents are encouraged to prepare in advance by charging electronic devices, ensuring flashlights are accessible, and making arrangements for any equipment or services that rely on electricity. Those travelling on the day of the outage should note that BC Ferries has indicated sailings are expected to operate as usual.
