Get ready, Cortes Island! Our brand-new Multi-Use Sport Courts are quickly coming together and are set to become a vibrant new hub for recreation, connection, and community fun.
Thanks to land generously provided by the Southern Cortes Community Association (SCCA) and the Cortes Island Community Foundation (CICF), along with funding support from the BC Gaming Commission Capital Projects Program and the Strathcona Regional District Community Works Fund, this exciting project is becoming a reality. A heartfelt thank you also goes to our SRD Director Mark Vonesch, the SRD Board and staff, and the many generous individual donors who have helped move this project forward.
This project would not be possible without the incredible community support behind it. Huge thanks go to Cora and the SCCA Board for championing the project from the beginning, alongside Manda and the Cortes Island Community Foundation.
We also want to recognize the amazing work of Matt Cuscianna, who expertly prepared the site using top-quality aggregate from Island United, as well as Darryl Czegledi and the Valley Creative Concrete team, who poured the concrete pad with precision last week.
Next up, the perimeter fence will be installed in June, and once the concrete has fully cured, dedicated volunteers will begin painting the court lines and landscaping the surrounding area.
We are aiming for an official grand opening in mid-July, and the community can look forward to enjoying pickleball, basketball, and other hard-court sports right here on the island.
The excitement doesn’t stop there — fundraising efforts are still underway for a future roof structure that would allow for year-round play and all-weather community use.
Stay tuned for more updates, and thank you to everyone supporting this fantastic community project!
