MAY IS LYME DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH

May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month. [...] “One bite is all it takes” for blacklegged ticks to transmit the Borrelia burgdorferi bacterium.

Key focus areas for awareness include:

Prevention: Wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothing, use bug spray containing DEET or Icaridin, and check yourself, children, and pets for ticks after being outdoors.

Early Detection: The earlier a tick is removed, the lower the risk of infection. Key symptoms include a bullseye-shaped rash and flu-like symptoms.

For more information and resources, visit www.LymeDisease.org or the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation, https://canlyme.com

A great brochure is available at the Cortes Island Health Clinic.
