With respect to the application by Island United I'm humbly offering my comments to this important discussion.
As a local builder for the past 20 years I have often made use of what used to be called "The Cortes Pit"
Attempting to make use of as much local materials as possible seems to me even more important here than elsewhere due to our remote location for obvious reasons.
Whenever I have been required to order concrete or aggregate delivered by ferry from Campbell river I feel embarrassed by the exaggerated impact this causes.
I value this local quarry as an essential local provider of stone and aggregate. The addition of local concrete supply is a boon to the island, even if we use concrete as sparingly as possible due to its large ecological footprint.
I think local supply is the best option we have and that the quarry is appropriately situated to supply the whole islands needs while reducing life cycle impacts to a minimum.
Island united has been great to work with and supported me to obtain excellent results. I feel so much better working with a local business that sources local raw materials. I hope they can continue to run a successful business here despite the marginal demand. They are keeping the quarry going by upgrading its capacity to cover our future needs.
