Our community makerspace is up and running with 20 members so far. It is an incredible workshop with a great assortment of tools, including a kiln on loan from
Ellingsen Woods and a planer/moulder for making tongue & groove boards. The crew at Rainbow Ridge has been using the space to make trim for the new duplexes.
"The idea of a makers' space has been coming up on Cortes for a long time along with the value added discussion around the community forest and local lumber production. It's great that we have all these pieces of the puzzle coming together...I am very happy with how things are developing at the Makerspace and how much it is supporting the Housing Society construction!" -Mark Lombard
Shopmaster and member, Hannu Huuskonen recently built a new floor for his home from douglas fir that grew about 100m away and visited the kiln and the shaper about 500m away. "Doesn't get more local!" he declares.
We couldn't have created this impressive community resource without donations from the Cortes Island Community Forest, Quadra Builders, and many local donors and volunteers.
