This winter, the Cortes Island Women’s Resource Society is inviting our community to take part in a Winter Reading Challenge as part of our ongoing commitment to Reconciliation.
The challenge:
Read a book by an Indigenous author — all ages welcome.
It’s a great way to get through the rest of winter while learning more about Indigenous voices, stories, and lived experiences. Readers are encouraged to learn where the author is from and the name of their Indigenous language.
Where to find books
• Marnie’s Bookstore (Indigenous authors shelf)
• Cortes Island Library (Look for the Indigenous Authors Section and for titles on display!)
• Eaglespeaker Publishing:
https://www.eaglespeaker.com/booksEaglespeaker Publishing was founded by Jason EagleSpeaker, a Blackfoot and Duwamish author and illustrator now based in Mi’kma’ki (Nova Scotia). His Indigenous-owned publishing house features work by over 375 Indigenous authors from more than 400 First Nations communities.
Questions to reflect on
• What responsibilities does this book invite readers to consider?
• How does this story differ from mainstream representations of Indigenous peoples?
• What stayed with you after reading?
• How might this book influence how you engage with Indigenous voices?
We encourage community members to share book and author suggestions, and we’ll be hosting a sharing event in early Spring for those who would like to participate.

The Women’s Centre is grateful for the support of FolkU and our fantastic librarian, Bea, who has created a special section at the library for this event!!
