The Cortes Museum and Archive Society invites you to "Finding Home: The Cortes Island Experience," a community speaker series celebrating the unique journeys that bring people to Cortes Island. This time, you will meet Howie Roman.
Each month, a local resident will share their personal story – how they discovered Cortes Island, what drew them to make it their home, and what continues to inspire them to stay.
This one-and-a-half-hour event features an informal talk followed by an open Q&A, creating space for connection and conversation. Afterward, stick around for a casual social gathering to meet neighbours, share experiences, and strengthen the bonds that make Cortes Island a special place to live.
Whether you’re new to the island or a longtime resident, the Finding Home speaker series offers a chance to deepen your understanding of the community and the stories that shape it. We look forward to seeing you there!
One-and-a-half-hour event.
Hosted by Brian Scott. Our speaker – Howie Roman
In 1971, Howie Roman was a 20-year-old kid from New York City. Together with his girlfriend, he was looking for a suitable place to escape to, and after looking at some of the southern islands, they found Cortes. The ferry was two years old, making Cortes remote but still accessible. With a population of around 300 people, mostly gravel roads, and limited power distribution, Cortes fit Howie’s fantasies of a place that was not New York. As Howie succinctly puts it, “fifty-four years later it has changed an incredible amount, but it still ain't New York!”
Come to hear Howie’s story and discover his journey.
