The Cortes Island Museum & Archives recently welcomed researchers, Tamasyn Kennedy and Sarah Rempel and curator Amy Vandal from the Museum at Campbell River. Their research project, "Tracing Japanese Canadian Settlements on Northern Vancouver Island" aims to deepen understanding of Japanese Canadian settlements and community life in Northern Vancouver Island, focusing on the years leading up to World War II, during the internment period, and the post-war settlement era.
Tamasyn and Sarah are interested in the history of the Nakatsui family of Cortes Island.
In additional to material they found in the Cortes Museum Archives they would like to know:
-Does anyone have a picture of the Nakatsui family? T
-Are there any pictures or recollections passed down of the planting of the Canadian maple (donated by Yaichi Nakatsui) next to St. James Church, in 1927?
If you have any information, photographs, or family stories please let us know at archivescortesmuseum.com
