Cortes DeathCare Collective

We work to integrate death as part of life by initiating conversations, providing education, and encouraging people to prepare for the end of life. We also empower, guide, and support the practice and process of caring for our own dead and dying, in community. Our monthly meetings will resume in September; come say hello at the Friday, July 25, Farmers Market.
If you have any death-related questions or needs, please don't hesitate to contact us, even on short notice. You can reach us at Margaret 250-204-3709 or Emma 250-208-4468. Visit our website, islanddeathcare.ca.
Thanks,
Margaret

QUADRA ISLAND SHUTTLE

Starting June 1, you can catch the Quadra shuttle from Heriot Bay to Quathiaski and back, or to any other location on Quadra, for $20 one way. Phone: 250-914-1010. Booking in advance is necessary.

The Better at Home Program will be working with the shuttle in the near future after they evaluate their initial trial weeks. Better at Home hopes to offer this connection to its clients, along with a Campbell River taxi service, for those who have medical appointments in Campbell River on days when the Klahoose Bus is not operating. BETTER AT HOME UPDATES

The community lunch cooks are taking a well-deserved break for the summer. We will resume in September.

A HUGE thank you to Yasmina, Joseph, Linda, Emma, Georgina, Carie and Noba for showing up and creating a delicious lunch every week. We are so lucky to have a solid team that loves to cook.

The first sign-up round of the heat pump program is now closed, and we are moving forward with the 35 participants who signed up. We will share the results once the bulk application is approved and the heat pumps are installed. In the fall, we will decide whether to run another round, depending on the feedback.

AGM – JUNE 17 – MEETING DECISIONS

Our last AGM took place on 17 June 2025 in the Pioneer Room.

The meeting was divided into two parts. The first part dealt with the usual year-end items: Sue Ellingsen’s President’s report, 2024 AGM minutes, and Cathy Winter’s annual financial statement. These were all approved.

For the second part, Sadhu Johnston of the Cortes Island Housing Society took the chair and outlined the steps that have taken place over the last few months to amalgamate the boards of the CISS and CHS. This change should benefit both societies.

Back in January, your board agreed in principle to accept a series of guidelines and steps that would allow CHS paid staff to assume the administration and maintenance of the Seniors Village. As part of his presentation, Sadhu read a memorandum of understanding, a slightly longer version of the document the board approved in January. The housing society, which does not have members like our society, would benefit from using CISS with its membership as a vehicle for grant applications. CISS would receive funding for its other projects, such as activities in Manson’s Hall, including the Christmas dinner.

The CISS board would now be drawn from the directors of CHS. Members of the outgoing CISS board who choose to do so will sit on an advisory committee to help CHS with Village problems and historical aspects that may be of use.

After a lengthy discussion, Sadhu presented a slate of CHS directors who have agreed to serve on the new CISS board. Those who were not already members of CISS have now joined. The slate: Elizabeth Anderson, Bill Weaver, Bruce Partridge, Trygve Ellingsen, Karen Mahon, Carol London and Huong Luu. Biographies of these directors are available on the CHS website at https://cortescommunityhousing.org/our-team/.

The seven directors were elected to serve on the CISS board for 2025–2026.
