Building Soil Health & Garden Beds Year-Round is simple and rewarding. We can grow our best gardens with local, free resources used wisely. This free, interactive, hands-on workshop is a fun way to expand our understanding of building new garden beds and revitalizing older garden beds. Using mostly locally sourced materials with a focus on optimizing biomass from our most immediate surroundings, Lu will demonstrate a variety of ways to adapt the principles of hugels, no-dig/low-dig methods and soil microbial inoculation to build productive, resilient gardens with soil fertility and drought-tolerance. Homemade berry ice cream will be served at the end of the workshop.
Lucretia "Lu" Schanfarber grows two demonstration gardens - one on Cortes Island and the other on Quadra Island. She is an organic gardener with over 50 years experience in growing food plants and trees, berries, ornamentals and herbs. Lu practices and teaches a synthesis of gardening methods and techniques that promote soil health while nurturing plant guilds and food forest gardens with symbiotic relationships. She is the host of "Gabbing about Gardening", a weekly radio show on Cortes Radio. She also writes a regular gardening column for Maple Magazine. Lu welcomes people to tour her gardens and she provides a variety of hands-on gardening workshops. She loves making ice cream with the many kinds of berries she grows in her gardens.
