As if the takeover of broom and holly all over Cortes were not enough, now Gorse is starting to spread around the ferry terminal and likely on to the rest of the island.

Gorse has yellow flowers like broom and can be mistaken at a distance.

If you find yourself in the ferry lineup waiting, you can help prevent the spread of this awful prickly shrub by cutting them close to the root. Make sure you have pruning shears in your vehicle and find gorse growing along the road.

Cutting them may not prevent them from regrowing but it will at least prevent the spread of their seeds. They are in bloom at the moment. While you’re at it, cut some broom in bloom too!
