🌎 Its not too late!
The SRD is still accepting feedback about the proposed changes to the Cortes zoning bylaw. The conversation at the Climate Cafe last month was about how the proposed changes reflect our stated climate goals in the OCP and how we can be more resilient. SRD staff are considering amending their proposal as a result. Check out the latest at their website and send comments — it’s not too late!

🌎 Ecotrust Canada is giving free energy retrofit workshops at 2:00 and 6:30 at Mansons Hall on Tuesday, February 18, 2025. They will help guide people through the process of doing energy retrofits, installing heat pumps, new windows and solar panels etc.

🌎 From Youth Climate Corps BC
As young people, we’re acutely aware that we’ve grown up in a unique time in history… but the truth is, we’re sick of living through unprecedented times. The climate emergency and growing economic crises impact our mental health in extreme ways. Food prices are astronomical and rent is unaffordable. If you feel overwhelmed by the challenges we face daily, you’re not alone. But as bleak as the future can seem, we believe there is hope. We need to employ more youth across British Columbia in climate careers. Sign Youth Climate Corps BC’s petition for Good Green Jobs here

🌎 The Climate Action Provincial Assemblies/CAPA
This is a participatory forum where leading members of BC’s climate action groups meet together to develop mutually supportive plans for the future. Register for this online event happening Feb. 20 at 6.30 pm

🌎 REALITY CHECK
B.C.’s electricity grid can handle increasing demands and keep costs low thanks to renewables and energy trading: report by Clean Energy Canada
Meeting B.C.’s 2030 EV sales targets would only increase electricity demand in the province by 2%, while heat pumps have a nominal impact on the grid.

🌎 Plastics are Big Oil’s “Plan B”
Canada’s plastics ban and the group that wants to scrap it: An industry coalition is challenging the ban on checkout bags, cutlery, takeout containers, (most) straws and more. But the federal government is fighting back, for now: The Narwhal

🌎 Expanding U.S.-backed fracking operations in B.C.
If you are concerned about the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission (PRGT) project and how this U.S.-backed fracking operation in BC will:
-Raise utility bills for families in BC
-Hand more control of our energy resources over to the United States
-Fly in the face of communities along the pipeline route opposed to the project
-Destroy fresh water, salmon and wildlife habitat
-Make climate change WORSE (the methane released into the atmosphere is worse than burning coal)
-Delay the creation of good jobs in the renewable energy industry
