Thanks to everyone who came out to support Clayoquot Action and view the movie Salmon Secrets on Jan 12! And special thanks to Dan Lewis and Bonny Glambeck for making the journey from Tofino to tell their story and answer our questions about the impacts of salmon farming on the wild salmon and the marine environment. We had a strong showing of community support and sent Dan and Bonny home with about $200 in donations to continue their work in monitoring the salmon farms in Clayoquot Sound and exposing the damage they do to the environment.
Status of Salmon Farms near Cortes IslandJust because DFO has shut down the salmon farms in the Discovery Islands, this doesn’t mean we can be complacent. Last weekend, Kate and I went by the Raza Island salmon farm site, just north of Cortes, and we were surprised to see that while the farm had no fish in it,
all of the infrastructure is still there. (Photos from the Raza farm taken 26 Jan 2025)
I called the Provincial Government and found out that the lease fees have been paid and farm tenure is in good standing. Cermaq appears ready to restock that farm with Atlantic salmon at a moments notice.
