Hello fellow islanders,
It has been one month since the
Neighbourhood Emergency Preparedness Planning Workshops! We are excited to share that we had over 50 people in attendance! If you weren’t able to make it, it is possible that one of your neighbours did!
For those that were there, we'd like to remind and encourage you to reach out to and plan a meeting with your neighbours to begin creating a Neighbourhood Emergency Preparedness Plan (NEPP)!
Being organized will help you and your neighbours prepare for emergencies and disasters, both large and small.
Here are some reminders for you and your neighbours to consider when creating these plans!
1)
Call a meeting with your very near neighbours to go over the kinds of emergencies you are all vulnerable to, identify their unique challenges and strengths, and ideas for increasing resilience. Some helpful prompts are:
* What help/resources can you offer?
* What help will you need?
* What else does the neighbourhood need support
with? Where are the gaps?2)
Please use the resource materials that were provided at the workshops! They are there to help you organize your plans. You can also find resources on the
SRD website.
3)
Appoint a contact person for their group/neighbourhood who can communicate with ESS and/or Shaun for resources, materials and questions. Email contact:
preparednessstrathconard.ca4)
Create a goal to gather twice over the winter to discuss and continue creating a Neighbourhood Emergency Preparedness Plan!
5) Look forward to another island-wide NEPP workshop in the early spring to follow-up on your Neighbourhood's Plans.
Lastly, we'd like to encourage you to
download the Alertable App or visit the Alertable website for current, up to date alerts on a variety of relevant and important information to keep people aware.
ESS would like to thank all islanders who showed up and offered their enthusiasm, insights and ideas to strengthen our community’s resilience. We would also like to thank Shaun Koopman and Casey Longhurst at the SRD for their community organization and emergency preparation support!
Stay tuned in the spring for a follow-up workshop!
