Our Fall 2024 Update
H is for habitat … homes for herons, hairy manzanita, hemlock, hardhack and humans.
Our magnificent Children’s Forest wraps around a still saltwater lagoon. These ecologically, culturally, recreationally and spiritually rich forest lands alongside Carrington Bay Regional Park have for years been a place for children to connect with nature. Here, children and youth have engaged in place-based learning, stewardship and leadership activities, and been nurtured by wild spaces.
The Forest Trust for the Children of Cortes Island Society (FTCCIS) is a BC Society (2010), a registered charity (2014) and is celebrating 15 incredible years of programming and projects. Amazing
We are also celebrating 15 years of dedicated work towards the acquisition and protection of the Children’s Forest through discussions with Mosaic Forest Management/Island Timberlands.
At our roots, the FTCCIS has been guided by its founding Vision:
• To establish, in perpetuity, a legacy of protected, natural forest on Cortes Island on behalf of children and future generations.
• To nurture relationships between children and nature, and to inspire advocacy for the natural world.
and Mission:
• acquire the ‘ Children’s Forest’,
• protect, steward, and provide access to the ‘Children’s Forest’,
• develop and deliver nature-based educational programs,
• conduct long-term, scientific research.
The FTCCIS and Mosaic are close to completing the valuation of 2 core parcels of the 5 total parcels, and expect to agree on a purchase price soon. Do wait for the wolf howls and drum rolls as we launch our fundraising drive in 2025 for purchase funds, so please save your pennies, hundreds and thousandsWe are pausing our past successful Giving Tuesday fundraising drives for 2024 out of consideration for donor fatigue in light of our expected fundraising campaign. Of course, we welcome any funds people wish to contribute before 2024 closes.
In the meantime, the FTCCIS Board extends a forest of thanks to all the Children’s Forest supporters over the years for so much: the community support for embracing our bold vision; the financial generosity of many that supported our operational costs and professional fees for valuation; and to all the children and youth for their lively engagement and presence in the Children’s Forest.
Please stay tuned for continued information and updates.
“Forests are beautiful and they create oxygen. They are a safe place for animals and are very important. I would put the Children’s Forest into a trust like Linnaea Farm, or turn it into a provincial park for people to use the trails.” (Ella)
