October 12 from 3-5pm at Mansons Hall, NDP Candidate Michele Babchuk

Unfortunately Conservative Candidate Anna Kindy cannot commit to a meeting at this time but she welcomes phone calls from the community.

The Climate Action Committee provided each candidate with a list of question. Come on out and hear the answers. Ask your own! Let them know what matters to YOU!

Climate Crisis
Canada has declared a climate emergency how do you understand this?  Please describe your understanding of the Paris Agreement, UN IPCC AR6, and what is BC's fair-share of the remaining safe carbon budget (1.5C).

UN Secretary General Antonio-Guterres has said "Investing in new fossil fuel infrastructure is moral and economic madness."  Will you commit to ending fossil fuel infrastructure expansion?  Will you commit to phasing out fossil fuel extraction in BC?  By what date?  How do you propose to do this?

Fossil fuel advertising is misleading the public about critical public health issues
will you commit to a fossil fuel advertising ban? details https://www.stopfossilfuelads.ca/

Climate change is caused mainly by the pollution of wealthier people, but its costs are borne disproportionately by the poorer segment -- what policies do you advocate that will address this injustice?

North Island and Broader Regional Environmental Issues
How would you ensure that the North Island is prepared for the increasing impacts of climate change, such as wildfires, droughts, global food shortages, and ocean acidification?

How will you ensure that Indigenous communities in the North Island are central to discussions on climate policy and land stewardship? What policies would you introduce to strengthen partnerships between the provincial government and First Nations in climate action?

What initiatives would you introduce to improve public transit and reduce transportation emissions in rural and remote areas of the North Island? How would you ensure that the transition to clean energy in the North Island is affordable and inclusive, especially for low-income and rural communities? What specific programs would you implement to help these communities lower their energy costs while adopting cleaner technologies?

Cortes has a community forest operation but are still bound by Provincial expectations and requirements to use unsustainable forestry practices. How will your party increase autonomy for community forests to make decisions about their local forests? Will your party give more communities the option to take on stewardship of their own forests through community forest agreements?

What is your plan to manage the ongoing conflict between protecting old-growth forests and sustaining jobs in the forestry sector?  How would you work with both conservationists and the logging industry to find long-term solutions?  What is your view of the success of the old-growth logging deferral program?

How do you plan to balance the region’s reliance on resource industries like forestry, mining, and fisheries with the need for environmental protection and climate action? What specific regulations would you change or introduce to ensure economic sufficiency and environmental sustainability?

Politics
What is the mechanism and frequency by which your party leadership hears and incorporates your voice?  Will you be in a position to shape your party's policy?  What is your approach/strategy to incorporating the perspectives of citizens?

How transparent are decisions by your party? Is there a clear and scrutinizable logic-chain that allows citizens to understand how conclusions were arrived at, who informed the conclusions and which facts were selected or omitted?

How would you work across party lines to advance climate policies that are critical to the North Island and broader BC, especially considering the urgency of the climate crisis?
