A message from the DCC:

In times of heartbreak and loss, let us weave in as much love and beauty as possible.

Death can be hard and sad, but it doesn't need to be scary, and we don't need to go through it alone.

During this past year, we guided, supported, and assisted six Cortes families to navigate deaths in ways that were personal, respectful, and affordable. There is richness in taking care of our own dead and dying, in community.

Death is not the opposite of life, but part of it.

Those who die on Cortes can be buried here; often their body doesn’t need to leave the island. Those who die in hospital can come home. Those facing death can be supported. We come alongside, step by tenderhearted step, bringing our skills, knowledge, experience, equipment, and heart. We call this “Community-Led Death Care”.

We are appealing to our community for funds to train more volunteers, provide payment for those with a significant role in death care, and support families with limited resources.

Please consider donating to the Community-Led Death Care fund, through the Cortes Island Community Foundation cortesfoundation.ca/donate-now/, choosing “Death, Disability & Elder Care” as the tax-deductible recipient. You could also e-transfer moneystewardislanddeathcare.ca, or mail a cheque to Island Death Care Society, PO Box 313, Mansons Landing, B.C. V0P 1K0. Thank you.

Support those who may someday be there for you and yours.
