Helen - FOCI
Friends of Cortes Island would like to offer huge thanks to everyone who took part in the first ever whole island Big Beach Clean up!
Enormous thanks to everyone who collected garbage off the beaches, including the communities in Treedom, Tiber Bay and Red Granite. It was fantastic to see all the super sacks getting filled up, and the large amount of garbage that got collected.
Much appreciation too to all of the project partners who helped enormously it making all it happen:
• Klahoose Shellfish Partnership, Ken and Paul, for hosting the Ocean Legacy Bin at the Klahoose Aquaculture Building, and facilitating the garbage drop off.
• Comox Strathcona Waste Management, and Stephanie Vidal, for invaluable support in supplying the Bin and the super sacks, helping coordinate the sorting of materials, and getting everything off the island to be recycled
• 10,000 Whales and Leslie Mack-Mumford for the generous sponsorship of the event
• Hollyhock for hosting a super sack and sitting on the steering group
• HACI for hosting a super sack at the Mansons Government Dock
• Ocean Legacy Foundation for sponsoring the bin and the super sacks.
A special shout out also to Alex and Sam, FOCI’s Park Rangers, for dropping off and collecting all of the super sacks, helping with sorting and doing an awesome cleanup at the ‘Maple Tree’ beach. Many thanks also to Soma and Autumn for help with publicity, and your enthusiastic support of the project.
All in all, a fantastic community effort, and so awesome to get the garbage off the beaches, out of the ocean and to be recycled!
We hope to make this an annual event. If you would like to take part, host a super sack, or have suggestions for how we can make it even better next year, we would love to hear from you! All ideas are very welcome!
