Greetings!
Over the last few weeks I’ve shared the frustrating news that our funding request to BC Housing wasn’t awarded for Rainbow Ridge townhomes, as well as the good news that we were awarded funding from the Strathcona Regional District (SRD) to build our access road, as well as the very exciting news that we are purchasing a property with existing houses to launch the Cortes Community Land Trust.

As you can see, there’s a lot going on. Today, I’m writing to share more good news that: we’re working with the Health Association to provide housing for doctors. We welcome your involvement in our work and in learning about what other rural island communities are doing to address housing challenges. Please join-us in some of the upcoming activities and let’s work together to fix the housing crisis on Cortes.

It’s doable and we are committed to doing it.

Cortes Housing Society (CHS) and Cortes Community Health Association (CCHA) work together

The CHS and CCHA are pleased to be working together to ensure that all the locum doctors have secure, year-round housing. The CCHA will be leasing the two-bedroom home at the recently announced Cortes Community Land Trust, on the property that the CHS is purchasing. Through this new initiative, we are buying suitable existing homes to provide immediate and much needed rental housing. In addition to the home that the doctors will be utilizing, there is a four bedroom home that the CHS is going to be renting-out.

Please save the date to join the Cortes Housing Society for an open-house on June 2nd, 9-11 AM 2024 to tour the property and share your ideas with us for how we could best utilize the property as a community asset.

Community Land Trust Housing Forum on Saturday, May 18th at 10 AM

The land trust model is one used successfully in other places. We want to learn from other rural island communities that are ahead of us. I hope you’ll join our housing forum to hear more about Community Land Trusts on May 18th (10AM – 12 PM) https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82984032662?pwd=WTQ0UWJKYnNxV2ErVURNdjErU21YZz09

This forum is a great opportunity to learn about how this model is working in other places, as well as to discuss how we can best utilize this model on Cortes.

The Cortes Housing Society will continue to work at every viable angle and option to secure the housing needed to keep our community strong and diverse and the land trust model will be an important part of our tool-box of solutions.

Cortes Renters Forum

Please join the Cortes Housing Society and Regional Director Mark Vonesch along with people seeking long-term and secure housing on Cortes. We are seeking input on housing challenges and different types of housing that people are interested in, from subsidized rentals and rental housing to affordable homeownership. The forum is intended to bring together all people on Cortes who are seeking housing or access to land to help shape the future of housing and our work in this space.
