Big news! BCTransit has finally announced plans to close the transit gap between Qualicum and Nanaimo. This means transit riders will be able to make bus connections between Campbell River transit and Comox Valley transit, and then on to Nanaimo transit — for a total fare of $6.50. They are still working on upgrading the transfer point at Deep Bay, but this is an important commitment toward future mobility options.

“This is very exciting news as riders will now be able to travel from Campbell River all the way to Victoria and visa versa,” said Darren Marshall, senior manager of transportation services with the Regional District of Nanaimo.

This link will offer an excellent low-cost option for car-free travellers, and you can also put your bike on all of the buses for no additional charge.

Of course you will need to check each regional schedule carefully to make sure all the connections meet up. And even if you time all the connections perfectly the journey will probably take 1-2 hrs longer in total than driving. But remember – never a sailing wait!

*Note: as of writing, it is only possible to get as far as Union Bay by transit. Keep checking for updates.
