The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) is developing a Poverty Reduction Plan that outlines goals and actions designed to decrease the impact of poverty within the community. This Plan is being developed in partnership with the City of Campbell River and the Campbell River and District Coalition to End Homelessness, and collaboratively with other government agencies and organizations.
The purpose of a Poverty Reduction Plan is to create a clear path forward to improve living conditions and increase the opportunities available to those living in poverty. The SRD’s Poverty Reduction Plan will provide in depth research, analysis, and recommendations related to eight (8) priority action areas: Housing / Families, children, and youth / Education and training / Employment / Income support / Social support / Discrimination and stigma / Safe, affordable, transportation.
The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) has received $147,700 from the Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM) Poverty Reduction Planning and Action Program to move forward with a Poverty Reduction Strategy for the region. The Province of British Columbia’s Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction is also providing funding to support local governments in reducing poverty at the local level and to support the Province’s own Poverty Reduction Strategy, TogetherBC.
“The SRD is appreciative to have received funding to assist with the creation of a Poverty Reduction Plan for the region, “ said Aniko Nelson, SRD Senior Manager of Community Services. “In the wake of overlapping economic crises, it is more important now than ever to assess and be proactive to the needs of our communities”.
Engagement with member municipalities, First Nations, community organizations, service providers, and people with lived and living experience and the larger community will be an important part of the creation of the Poverty Reduction Plan.
Community Insight Forums are scheduled to take place later this month. Diverse feedback from community members will assist the SRD in understanding the context of poverty within the Strathcona Regional District. Community members are invited to attend the upcoming Community Insight Forums to learn more about the Poverty Reduction Plan.
