Happy 2024 from FolkU and Cortes Literacy!

There are lots of exciting happenings and new beginnings this month at FolkU.

Our first Poetry and Song Share event will be held this coming Tuesday evening. This will be an ongoing event, hosted by Louis Belcourt, and held in the Pioneer Room on every third Tuesday of the month. Come on out and share songs, poetry, and other creative writing!

This Sunday (and every Sunday in January) at the library, Monica Nawrocki and Dayna Davis will be hosting writing workshops and last Sunday, Rebeka Carpenter hosted the 4th meeting of the Cortes Book Club.

We are delighted to be partnering with the Cortes Island Museum and Archives Society to offer a two-part Valentine’s Day series hosted at the museum: Love Letters of Cortes. Before V-Day, Jane Newman will be hosting a love letter writing (and making) workshop, and on the evening of V-Day Oriane Lee will be hosting a love letter reading! The community will be invited to read and listen to love letters of past and present. A truly sweet way to celebrate love - for our partners, friends, neighbours, and community.

Other collaborations in the works include a food skill series with Klahoose, a housing forum series with CHS, and a makers + emotional literacy series with the Women’s Centre – more to come!

Last week we launched our Neighbours Helping Neighbours program, a community-led literacy support system. Check it out and sign up to volunteer!

FolkU Fridays have moved onto the radio for the season and we are beginning our year by hosting 3 themed group discussions: emergency response + rural resilience, intergenerational thoughts on climate change, and arts on Cortes. Tune in from 1 to 2:30pm every Friday.
