Savary Island with George!Thursday, July 13, 9 am to 4 pm, $165
Our trip aboard the
Misty Isles takes us to this very remarkable sandy beach at low tide.
The foreshore stretches out – a gigantic expanse of sand and eelgrass – fun to explore and with minimal damage to the sea life.
This hard-to-visit neighbouring island is a terminal moraine of pure sand – except for the rocky outcrop at the southern end harbouring the most northerly copse of Garry oak trees in North America.
Subdivided like salami in the 70s, being one 1 km wide and 11 km long, the island still has plenty of wildlife. But no bears, cougars, or even raccoons due to its distance from Malaspina Peninsula.
Join Jonas, Captain of the
Misty Isles, and myself, George Sirk, for an exploration of the northern expanse of the intertidal landscape. Bring your water shoes, a big hat, and wonder at the beauty of this hard-to-reach island, no ferries!
We will also cruise the
Copelands – a pristine provincial park, and
Mayor Island – a seabird colony with glaucous-winged gulls and their babies dotting the bare rocks.
We will search for whales, dolphins, seals and even the sea otter! that has graced our waters.
--
by George SirkThe walk will be over slippery rocks, seaweeds, and sand so you need to be sure-footed. Rubber boots are a must to protect your feet from sharp-edged shellfish. We also recommend a walking stick.
