Happy Spring Rain Gardeners!
If you need some garden space this spring, there are a few plots available at the Cortes Natural Foods Coop Community Garden. If you would like one, please email me at chamadaska[at]gmail or call 0242 no later than April 30th, and I will put you on the list (which might become a waiting list). Be sure to read the garden guidelines below to see if this is a good fit for you.
Thank you to the CNFC for making this amazing garden space available to the community!
Gardeningly yours,
Kate, Volunteer Garden Coordinator
Cortes Coop Community Garden Guidelines 2023
1. Payment of plot fee $20 due by May 7, 2023. Cash or e-transfer. This money helps pay for tools and other things used by gardeners
2. Sign up for one of the garden jobs posted on the garden shed
3. Attend garden meetings and work parties throughout the season
4. If you plan to stop using your space, please let the garden group know as soon as possible so your plot can be given to someone else
5. Allotments of plots must be made from a waiting list on a first-come, first-served basis to any resident of Cortes with preference to those with no garden space elsewhere and who reside or work in the local neighbourhood
6. Community gardens are for chemical-free gardening only; no application of synthetic pesticides, insecticides, herbicides or fungicides are to be used, including synthetic fertilizers
7. Plots must be worked by May 25 with exceptions made for extreme weather. Plots not used by this date must be reassigned
8. Water is a limited resource and should be used sparingly with timers
9. Garbage service is not provided. Trash removal is the responsibility of the community gardeners
10. Tend to your plot and the nearby pathways often
• pick up litter when you see it
• put dead plants into the compost bin. Any diseased plants and seedy or invasive weeds need to be bagged and disposed of or composted off-site so they do not invade the garden
• turn off water sources when you are done
• roll up hoses, return tools to the shed, and lock the shed before leaving the garden
11. Be mindful of safety
• supervise children in the garden at all times
• garden during daylight hours only
• garden with others
12. Respect other gardeners and neighbours
• do not work in another person’s plot without their approval
• plant tall plants and vines in places where they will not invade your neighbours plot
• do not smoke or use drugs or alcohol in the garden
• do not bring pets, use radios or speakers, or start fires
13. Report damage to the garden group
14. Help resolve any disputes in good faith. Report any concerns or conflicts to the garden coordinator
15. Remove all dead plants and materials at the end of the season and dispose/compost them properly. Ensure your garden is cleaned up by October 31, 2023.
