Cortes Island Academy
The Cortes Island Academy local student application for the 2023-24 semester is now open! This is for students who will not need a homestay on Cortes Island (the general application will be coming soon...).

The Cortes Island Academy (CIA) is high school education outside the box. Created to help our community with the struggles of high school education on a rural island, our pilot semester (Sept 2022- Jan 2023) was an amazing success! Founded by the Cortes Island Community Foundation, Campbell River School District 72, and the people of Cortes Island, CIA offers a 20 week (one semester) program focused on place based education.

CIA is a dynamic program designed for students who are looking to expand their educational experience beyond the classroom. We will engage the complexities of our relationships with natural environments through experiential and project-based learning. The 2023-2024 CIA semester runs September 2023 through January 2024 with an overarching theme of forest ecology. CIA has teamed up with Dr. Suzanne Simard and the UBC Mother Tree Project to join with the local facilitators, knowledge-holders and SD 72 teachers to provide a deep dive into forest ecology all while gaining high school credits.
