This week, your WTF family is hosting two speakers on ecological/adaptive forest management.
WTF friday is a mostly-weekly gathering of souls to respond and reflect on unprecedented changes to the biosphere and noosphere.
Join us in person or by zoom at 5pm, Friday February 3. till about 7. If you come in person, there will be soup and bread.
Ruth Waldick is an Associate Professor working on Climate change adaptation and impacts; Adaptive Management; Ecosystem-based Adaptation; and Science Communication.
Ruth will be presenting on how historic logging and other land use throughout the 20th Century has shifted the assemblage of ecological communities characteristic to the Coastal Douglas-fir (CDF) zone from fire resistant to fire vulnerable.
In contrast to the rest of the province, land in the CDF zone is largely privately owned, with a high proportion of the population living in the woodland/residential interface. This creates challenges in managing fire risk and protecting the Coastal Douglas-fir ecosystems unique to the Southern Gulf Islands.
Transition Salt Spring has been working with regional stakeholders on a couple of fronts to advance this conversation and address some information gaps, including:
-Science: setting up an experimental watershed to trial and monitor new techniques and engage the regional community of practice (Climate Adaptation Research Lab, Salt Spring Island)
-Partnerships/education: working with local government organizations and foresters on pilot ideas for new approaches and methods for enhancing watershed function and mitigating the risk of catastrophic canopy fire
-Capacity/Community of Practice: organizing a first workshop for the region to discuss fire, fire risk, and goals and values for CDF forests"
And our second speaker, Bruce Ellingsen, is a 70-year resident of Cortes Island with a family background in forestry and a lengthy interest in sustainability.
Bruce has worked to help establish the Cortes Community Forest General Partnership. He has sought guidance on sustainable approaches to forestry from the book of nature. He has written on sustainable forestry in the Watershed Sentinel.
