Re: Feedback for Tower #109114 - Mansons Landing

To Brian Greg and whomever it may concern at ISED,

As Strathcona Regional District’s Director for Cortes Island, I am writing to provide feedback on the proposed cell phone tower #109114 - Mansons Landing.

From reading letters that people have sent in and speaking directly to people living on Cortes, there are significant concerns about RF radiation, the negative impact on property values, and the process by which this consultation has been carried out.

There are also people on Cortes that support the tower and its proposed placement or support the tower but would like it moved further away from people’s homes. Although it’s not clear that this tower will improve reception, emergency responders have shared that with limited cell phone reception on the island, individuals in emergency situations have had to drive to find reception before making an emergency call.

I want to make it clear that I support Tla’amin First Nation leadership and the sovereignty they have over making decisions on their land. Reconciliation includes respecting and celebrating Indigenous authority.

My recommendation is that, if this tower is going to happen on Cortes, you work to ensure that it is placed at least 400m away from people’s homes. I understand this will increase the costs of the project, but hope you can see that as money well spent as you consult in good faith with our community.

Thank you and please reach out if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Mark Vonesh
