With the beginning of 2023 underway, the Forest Trust for the Children of Cortes Island Society (FTCCIS) and Mosaic Forest Management (Mosaic) are jointly providing the Cortes Island community an update of our ongoing work around the Children’s Forest.
FTCCIS and Mosaic signed a Letter of Intent in 2021 that commits both organizations to working collaboratively on the future of the 5 Island Timberlands owned parcels we refer to as the Children’s Forest. This agreement and the ongoing collaborative work of the two organizations have led to mutual understandings and trust. Three parcels of the Children’s Forest were included in Mosaic’s BigCoast Forest Climate Initiative earlier in 2022, deferring timber harvesting for up to 25 years. The remaining two core parcels on Carrington Lagoon were not included in BigCoast Forest project in order to continue the productive acquisition discussions that are underway. For more on BigCoast Forest, visit
www.bigcoastforest.com.
In support of our Letter of Intent and our ongoing work together, Mosaic and FTCCIS have engaged expert crews to support the valuation of the two core parcels around Carrington Lagoon.
Those crews will be completing their field work on Cortes Island under Mosaic and FTTCIS direction in early 2023, commencing in January.
This work will inform future negotiations between the FTCCIS Negotiations Team and Mosaic as we move forward in the acquisition process related to these two parcels.
