Hello community,
I have deep concerns about the 14 story (207 ft.) cell tower that Telus is again proposing to build, now approximately 800m behind my house (and only 200m from my neighbor Judy’s house.). My primary concern is for my young children, 5 and 3 years old, who would grow up in its shadow. Among many other things, I also have deep concern for the animals in which the airways are their dependent medium (bees, bats, birds, insects, etc.) and for which no long term studies exist; the overwhelming majority of studies which do exist, show that they are all sensitive to changes in electromagnetic frequencies. We are all guinea pigs in that sense, in terms of ever newer technologies rolling out that do not have long term study results available.
Perhaps you do not share my concerns and I do not judge you for that. Perhaps you see benefits to increased coverage and increased cell phone use. I imagine we’ve seen different information and base our opinions and concerns accordingly. Feel free to comment but my intention is not to argue or debate. My intention Is to reach out to others who may share my concerns and not be aware of the situation.
I also have deep concern for the general effects of cell phone usage that we can see across culture in the places where service is constant. Teenage use of smart phones is particularly of note in terms of a direct relationship to mental health challenges and I also observe our adult lives to be increasingly influenced by cell phone use. One of the things I value about Cortes is that it is not enthralled with cell phone use and the culture shifts that accompany constant access and engagement. However, smart phones have still dramatically shifted our focus and habits, increasingly inserting themselves deeper and deeper into the patterns and functions of daily life. This tower (and the others underway in Whaletown and Squirrel Cove) would continue that trajectory. But this is not inevitable. It doesn’t have to continue like this and indeed I hope it doesn’t. I’m old enough to remember life before cell phones and I miss it deeply. I value present connection between us not mediated or interrupted by devices. What would our ancestors make of this and perhaps more pressing is what kind of world are we handing down to our children?
And know that there is a lot more that I am not getting in to about the saga of proposals and corporate behaviors of Telus, and the general tone and approach they have taken that does not display a company behaving with integrity and transparency throughout this process. If you’d like to know more about that you can message me and I’d be happy to chat with your further.
If you support the towers, blessings to you. I wish you well. No sarcasm there. And take this post as my willingness to stand up to the anger and derision that often flows so freely in communication on digital platforms.
If you share my concerns about the towers I ask that you (and every adult in your household that is concerned and willing) write a letter to Telus and the regulatory bodies that are, for the 3rd time, proposing to build a large one at the end of Rexford Rd. The name for that one is File BC109114 - Mansons Landing. If you’re concerned about the tower in Whaletown you can let them know that as well with a sentence referring to that tower as File BC109130 - Whaletown. Your letter can be short and simply state your desire, whatever that might be. Here are 3 email addresses which would be valuable to include if you do choose to write. There are also physical petitions going around and an online one here (
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WJYXD58) if you can’t track down a physical one.
The deadline for feedback in their public consultation process is January 13, 2023.
